Ahoi Ashtami Vrat

Ahoi Ashtami vrat is a fasting ritual performed by all Indian mothers for well being of their sons. This vrat falls on the eighth day of dark fortnight in Kartik month as per Hindu calendar. On this day mothers keep fast for the whole day and in the evening they offer sacred water to stars and pray for well being of their sons. Especially people from different parts of North India celebrate this vrat with a few variations,But broadly the following method is followed to observe the fasting and prayer.

All mothers wake up before sunrise, to have some refreshments and proceed to the temple to offer prayers for their children. The fast ends in the evening when the moon appears. Some families also break their fast once they see the stars in the sky.
The picture of Ahoi Mata is painted on a wall and a bowl of water is placed on it. Printed calendars, posters and pictures of Ahoi Mata are now available and can be used in place of the wall painting. An untwisted red colored thread is wrapped around the bowl of water and the edges are smeared with turmeric powder and placed on the left of the picture. Then the story of Ahoi Mata is read out by an elderly lady in the household. All the other women sit down to listen to the story.

The other essentials required for the prayer include grains that are placed in a plate and positioned in the center of the picture. The food offerings include puris, halwa, boiled channa and jowar, etc. Money offerings are also placed before the Mata's picture. Once the reading of the story is done, the sweets and money are distributed among children and elders of the family. Some families also have the tradition of making a garland with silver coins or keepsakes. They keep adding to this garland when a child is born in the family or a son gets married. Every year the Ahoi Mata picture is adorned with this garland and this tradition is passed on to future generations.
Legend :
Once upon a time, there lived a woman in a village. She had seven sons. One day she went to the forest to bring soil for the renovation and painting of her home (this was in the month of kartik just before the Hindu festival Deepawali). She started digging soil with axe nearby a den. Suddenly the woman's axe fell on the cub in the den and the cub died. The woman felt very sorry and sympathetic. She took soil from the forest and came back.
Few days later, all her seven sons died within a year. She was very sad. One day she narrated her woes to old ladies in her village . she was crying and told them that she didn't commit the sin and it happened unintentionally. She narrated to the ladies that once when she was digging for the soil in the forest her axe fell on the cub and thereafter within a year all my seven sons died. The ladies appreciated for confessing her guilt and then these ladies told that by confessing the sin she has atoned her half of the sin. They suggested the woman to pray the goddess Ashtami Bhagwati by sketching the face of the cub. By the grace of god your sin will cast off. The woman kept fast on the Kartik Krishna Ashtami and then onwards she started praying and keeping fast regularly. By the power of her prayer the God's grace showered and she could get back her all seven son. Since then, it became a ritual to worship the goddess Ahoi Ashtami Bhagwati religiously every year.

Among all the rings worn on the hand, the arsi occupies a special place in a woman's heart, not only because of its impressive size, but because of the function it performs. With the mirror set into it, the young maiden wearing it (most often a bride), can look and check, by just turning the thumb, if all that was adorning her head, or her hair, was in place. How to do Karwa Chauth Puja

Here I have brought for you the complete puja process of Karwa Chauth

How to Do Karwa Chauth Puja - Part 1

How to Do Karwa Chauth Puja - Part 2

Karwa Chauth , A Simple Way

Karwa chauth and Teej are considered as the Valentine’s day of India . Some women could not go for these festivals because they are tough , though they wanted to keep it.... So I personally believe that the devotion and enjoyment is more important than any rituals .So if you can keep these festivals in traditional way then very good, if not but you still wanna enjoy these festivals then here are my suggestions....

My three recommended way of fasting -:

(if you r not able to keep fast without water )
1. Have fast on liquids like tea, coffee, milk juice
2. Have phalahar once in a day time phalahar means fruits boiled potatos , sweet potatoes dry fruits
3 the third way is --once in a day time have simple veggy food without onion and garlic

Getting Ready –

1. Wear new or washed (clean) sari or suit ( please avoid Black and white dress )
2.Wear mangal sutra, toe rings, payal , sindoor n bindi on forehead, bangles and ear rings
3.If you wish , put mehandi and alta

Food for the day –

1. Prepare or get any sweet like Kheer or Halwa
2. Cook veggy food for evening

Simple Pooja process :-

Evening pooja

1. Get a picture of shiva parvati ganesh n kartikeya – U can get from net
2. place it on pooja place or in a clean place
3. lit lamp and agar batti
4.Sprinkle Jal (water), put sindoor and uncooked rice with haldi on picture
5. offer flowers
6. place sweet or kheer in front of God
7. Do meditation the picture for two minutes , imagine maa parvati dressed like a bride... and ask for her blessings .pray for your Husband and Family

Moon Pooja

When moon comes to the sky around 8 oclock . sprinkle jal(water) , sindoor rice and flower towards it, show the lamp. Show the kheer ( as you are offering food)
Put a sindoor tilak on ur husbands forehead . ask moon to bless you n your husband and the whole family with happiness.

If you could not see the moon

If you could not see the moon till nine because of weather etc. In my opinion, offer all these things (mentioned above for moon) to sky for the moon. And pray.See the moon on the Head of lord shiva on picture.

Enjoy Dinner --- Enjoy the sweet and dinner with the family or you can go out for dinner but don’t forget to remain veggi

Please Note – As I told you devotion and love between two of you is more important than any rituals so even if you haven’t kept the Fast then also you can enjoy this festival in this way -:
Wear nice dress and ornaments in evening, lit a lamp in front of God or at your prayer place and both of you ( wife n husband) pray in front of that for each other, then go out and have a nice dinner together ....

Enjoy being with each other ....and have a sweet time...:)

Karwa Chauth A Romantic Day

Karwa Chauth Vrat is one of the famous festivals of Hindu culture. On this day married Hindu women keep fast for the well-being of their husband. It is particularly famous in the northern part of the country which includes the stats like Rajasthan  , Uttar Pradesh , Punjab , Madhya Pradesh , and Gujarat.
India is the land of the colorful multicultural diversity and the impact of this diversity is quite visible on this Festival as well , though the core essence and the key rituals have remain unchanged.

Karwa Chauth has gained much of the popularity through the Bollywood and TV presentation. It has almost turned up as the Indian form of Valentines day and the reason that why this festival is a hot favourite of the cinema and TV soaps directors are its quite romantic rituals , for example.

1. Keeping the fast for  husbands with out food and some time without even water. Now a days many men also keep this fast for their wives.

2.All the ladies get the chance of redecorating themselves as a bride by wearing the bright bridal makeup with heavy jewellery , fine bridal dress and also henna on hands.

3.Waiting for the moon in the evening to break the fast.

4.Looking at the moon and then to husband before breaking the fast.

5. Having the first morsel  of food from the husband's hand

8. Getting some gift from the husband.

7. And then having the dinner with family and friends.

Many time women celebrate this day in a group which of course give them a chance to display their new dress and jewellery among friends.

Above all the other materialistic aspects, this fast surely represent the love and concern for the life partner. It makes their love , commitment and devotion  towards each other more strong.
